High-Resolution Programmable Scattering for Wireless Coverage Enhancement: An Indoor Field Trial Campaign

This paper presents a multi-bit reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with high phase resolution, capable of beam-steering in the azimuthal plane at sub-6 Gigahertz (GHz). Field trials realistic indoor deployments have been carried out, coverage enhancement performance ascertained for three common wireless communication scenarios. Namely, serving users an open lobby mixed line sight and non-line conditions, via junction between long corridors, multi-floor scenario propagation windows. work explores potential deployment to mitigate effects communications. In single transmitter, receiver link, received power improvement as much 40 dB is shown be achievable by suitable placement RIS, instantaneous bandwidth least 100 MHz possible over 3 4.5 GHz range. addition, resolution on optimal reception RIS experimentally verified, 2.65 compared 1-bit case.
